A product is manufacturing-ready when its design, documentation, materials, suppliers, tooling, quality controls, testing, compliance work, and production plan are aligned well enough to build repeatable units at the intended volume.
Readiness is not just “the prototype works.” It is evidence that the product can be made consistently, inspected objectively, supported by a supplier, and delivered with an acceptable level of cost and risk.

Manufacturing readiness questions
When should a manufacturing readiness review happen?
It can begin during product engineering and should be refreshed before final tooling, pilot production, and full production. The earlier major gaps are identified, the more options the team usually has.
Is manufacturing readiness the same as DFM?
No. DFM focuses on making the design suitable for a process. Manufacturing readiness is broader and includes documentation, suppliers, tooling, quality, testing, economics, and launch execution.
Can a readiness review be done before a factory is selected?
Yes. A pre-supplier review can clarify the evidence and capabilities a supplier must demonstrate, making the eventual selection more objective.
What if the product is not ready?
The output should be a practical sequence of next steps, not a vague pass or fail. Some gaps are simple documentation fixes; others require engineering, supplier, tooling, or business-case work.
